Questions for Reflection

  • Think about a time when you didn’t belong or were excluded. How did that feel for you? How did it affect you? Does being left out affect your behavior? Does it make you act defensively or feel compassionate for others? How do you think God wants us to use our experiences of feeling like we didn’t belong to care for other people?
  • How do Jesus' actions towards Zacchaeus and the woman who washed Jesus’ feet with her hair illustrate the difference between “fitting in” and “belonging”? As a church community that professes our faith in Jesus Christ, why might it be important for us to understand the difference between “fitting in” and “belonging”?
  • If you regularly attend FPC, brainstorm some ways you as an individual can proactively create space for others to feel a sense of belonging. If you are new (and even if you aren’t new!), name some ways people have welcomed you or could be more welcoming of you, either at FPC or in another community.
