Born and raised in Santa Cruz, I’ve been in fulltime parish ministry for 41 years – the first half which took place in Santa Cruz and Watsonville, and the last half in nearby Novato. While my parents wanted my two brothers and me to attend Sunday School at nearby First Presbyterian Church in Santa Cruz, neither of them had been baptized or had ever joined a church, nor did either of them attend worship regularly. Through that congregation’s commitment to nurturing dynamic ministries for children and youth, I became a Christian as an adolescent and eventually felt a distinct call to vocational ministry. After seminary and ordination I have had the distinct honor of baptizing both my parents and my two brothers, all of whom are now deceased.
My wife, Lisa, and I have known each other since first grade and have been married for 22 years. Through Lisa I have three stepchildren, all of whom are now adults. Daughter Alicia and son-in-law Matt and our grand-daughter Amelia live in Alexandria, VA. Son Will and daughter-in-law Courtney live in Oakland. Son Roger, our youngest, serves on active duty with the U.S.A.F. at Whiteman Air Force Base in Knob Noster, MO.
I love being a Minister of the Word and Sacrament! Teaching is my favorite pastoral activity, though preaching and providing pastoral care are other activities I find deeply meaningful. Serving with Dale, my closest friend in ministry, is a distinct honor and privilege. We have known each other for about 30 years and have been in a pastoral support group together since Dale arrived in Santa Rosa. While serving temporarily in Santa Rosa I am savoring the opportunity of spending time with my dear friend!
I enjoy running with friends, hiking, swimming, time in the Sierras, and as a former drummer, especially big band music and jazz, and rooting for the S.F. Giants and Golden State Warriors.
