Sermon: Jesus - Safe Savior or Challenging Lord?

Rev. Dr. Kent Webber

Questions for Reflection

  • Prior to ordering the slaughter of male infants two years old and younger in and around the village of Bethlehem, how had Herod the Great already proved to be a paranoid and ruthless ruler?

  • In C.S. Lewis series of children’s books, The Chronicles of Narnia Lewis presents the lion Aslan as the Christ-figure. In the first volume, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, after Mr. Beaver informs Susan that Aslan is a lion, she asks, whether he’s a safe lion. “Safe”, said Mr. Beaver. “Don’t you hear what Mrs. Beaver tells you? Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good!” How do you respond to Lewis’ image of Jesus as a powerful lion who is not at all safe, but is good?

  • As Lord – our master, owner, and ruler, what commands of Jesus do you find very challenging and perhaps a bit threatening as you seek to follow Him?

  • Is there someone in your family tree who represents an element of embarrassment or shame related to your family name? How does their reputation or actions affect your identity?

  • How does the model of the church as a “hospital for sinners” offer a better image of the gospel than that of a “school for saints”?

Sermon: Four Women in Jesus’ Genealogy

2021 Advent & Christmas Sermon Series: On the Edge of Something New
Rev. Emily Stockert

Questions for Reflection

  • Think about the stories of Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and Bathsheba. How does their inclusion in Jesus’ genealogy foreshadow some of Jesus’ actions in his ministry? (For example, you might take a look at John 8:1-20 and reflect on Bathsheba’s situation).

  • Choose one of the four women. Remind yourself of her story (if you have time, go and read her story in the bible.) If she were here to tell us about herself, how do you think she would tell her own story from her perspective? Do you think her point of view might differ from what has been recorded?

  • Why is it important to recognize the contributions of the women who are unnamed in the genealogy? Are each of these women a part of God’s plan? What do you think Jesus would say about these unnamed women?

Sermon: A Different Kind of Messiah

2021 Advent & Christmas Sermon Series: On the Edge of Something New

Questions for Reflection

  • Describe how Matthew’s presentation of Jesus as God’s Messiah differs from the first century expectations of Judaism?

  • How does Matthew’s explanation of Jesus’ name; that is, “he will save his people from their sins,” challenge the view we might otherwise have of ourselves?

  • In what way might our observance of Advent help us see our current circumstances and predicament as the possible start of something new – something God is bringing about?

Questions for Reflection

  • How does Abram/Abraham’s action reveal a lack of faith in God and how did his decision to deceive Pharoah affect his ability to fulfill the promise God gave to him?

  • Have you ever misjudged someone by seeing them in a limited way rather than as someone who has multiple dimensions? How did this affect your ability to appreciate the role God would play in his/her life?

  • Why might “trust” be a superior word to other similar words like “belief” and “faith?” In today’s text, how is Abram’s trust in God manifested?

  • What is God’s fourth and final promise to Abram and why is it of great importance to each of us today as followers of Jesus?

Sermon: Loss of Communication & Community

2021 Fall Sermon Series: Living with Love & Loss – Genesis 1-12
Rev. Dale Flowers

Questions for Reflection

  • From your life experience, what do you consider to be the greatest problem of communication today? And what has been its effect on your relationship with others?

  • What common theme(s) do you see in the story of the Tower of Babel with the other narratives in Genesis 1-11 (compare humanity’s intentions with God’s)?

  • If this narrative is a continuation and culmination of humanity’s inability to be made right with God and one another, how does the summary statement in verse 9 – “there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth” anticipate God’s purpose in calling Abram/Abraham (Genesis 12)?

Sermon: One Big Family

2021 Fall Sermon Series: Living with Love & Loss – Genesis 1-12
Rev. Dr. Kent Webber

Questions for Reflection

  • What is your initial response to reading the long genealogical list contained in Genesis chapter 10? How relevant does it first appear to your life today?

  • It seems to me that this passage actually addresses a very important question – “Is the diversity of peoples and cultures on planet earth part of God’s good plan for creation, or somehow a mistake?”

  • What is this passage teaching us about humankind? Why is that quite relevant for our lives today?

Sermon: Noah and the Ark: Repentance and Renewal

2021 Fall Sermon Series: Living with Love & Loss – Genesis 1-12
Rev. Emily Stockert

A written version of the sermon text is provided here at this link for listeners who may follow along better with the written word.Click here to read the sermon.

Questions for Reflection

  • Do you ever struggle with understanding Bible stories, like the story of Noah? Why might it be worthwhile to study bible texts that challenge us or make us uncomfortable?

  • Think about a close relationship you value. This can be with a friend, a relative, a spouse or partner, a child, or even a beloved pet. How much effort do you put forth on a regular basis in that relationship? Now, ask yourself if you desire a closer relationship with God. If you do, would you approach your relationship with God differently if you thought of God as a valuable “person” in your life?

  • Do you agree with the point in the sermon that individual repentance can lead to collective change towards a more just and peaceful world?

  • Bonus Question: In Genesis 9, the rainbow is a sign and seal of God’s covenantal care. In the sermon, Emily said she thinks about God (and communion) when she smells summertime barbecue. Are there images, scents, or other tangible things that help you feel closer to God?

Questions for Reflection

  • How does knowing that there have been many ways that the story of Noah has been interpreted over several thousand years influence your understanding of the biblical message?

  • The central theme of the sermon based on the story of Noah and the flood is: Systemic sin creates devastating losses to humanity and to creation. Try to put this idea into your own words. How would you say it?

  • What does it mean to break someone’s heart? Now, reflect on the idea that humanity has the capacity to break God’s heart. Would you live differently if you truly believed that you had the power to break God’s heart?

*What is the relationship between Psalm 23 (The Lord is my shepherd….your rod and your staff they comfort me) and Proverbs 13:24 (“Those who spare the rod hate their children, but those who love them are diligent to discipline”)?

*Why was Jesus taking the little children up into his arms and blessing them a radical act? Why is caring for children in our community part of our call as Christians? *Take some time to reflect on this time in our culture from a child’s perspective. If you were a child today, from what stresses might you need refuge and comfort? Is there a way you might (or already do) contribute to the well-being of children in our faith community and beyond?

Questions for Reflection

  • How would you describe the difference between sound advice and wisdom?

  • According to the Book of Proverbs, “the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom” –fear being in awe of God’s greatness and goodness with a corresponding response of adoration, worship, thankfulness, and love. How would you go about relating the truth of that statement to someone?

  • What are some indications from your own life that you take God more seriously than you do yourself? One way to approach this question is to compare yourself to the young man who asked Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life.

  • In today’s text, how does Paul describe resurrection as an embodied rather than as a disembodied existence (as did the Greeks)?

  • How does Paul’s treatment of the resurrection give you hope and provide you encouragement to serve Christ in this life?

Sermon: Every Church Needs a Barnabas

Rev. Dale Flowers

Questions for Reflection

  • In this sequence of stories in Acts, Luke describes some of the ways in which Barnabas encouraged the growth and development of the early church. Which of these acts of encouragement was the most significant and why?

  • Think of a time you have been the recipient of an act of encouragement. What did the encouragement mean to you personally? How important is encouragement to the growth and vitality of a congregation?

  • Do you naturally provide encouragement to others or do you need to be prompted to do so? If the later, what are sort of factors contribute to your being an encourager? Are you more likely to encourage others with your words or by your actions?

Rev. Dale Flowers

Questions for Reflection

  • Before Philemon gets to read Paul’s letter, he encounters the man who has wronged him. What do you think Philemon must have felt when he first sees Onesimus prior to reading Paul’s explanation of why he has returned? What do you think he might have said to Onesimus after having read the letter?

  • Of the three people featured in this letter –Paul, Philemon, and Onesimus—which do you feel faced the greatest challenge to live up to the gospel?

  • How does Paul’s request of Philemon challenge the common practice and expectations of slave owners in the first century?

Questions for Reflection

  • The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke all unite in presenting the Lord’s Supper in its original setting as a Passover meal (a seder). What is unique about that annual meal?

  • According to Luke’s account, what evidence do Jesus’ eucharistic words at the last supper provide that he understood his approaching death as a sacrificial offering on behalf of others?

  • Finally, what comfort does the Lord’s Supper provide you as you think about what lies beyond this earthly existence for those who trust in Christ?

  • The Kingdom of God is the realm of God’s rule and corresponding blessings. When the disciples associated God’s Kingdom with the nation of Israel they short-changed what God intended. How do we make a similar mistake by equating God’s Kingdom with the Church rather than God at work in the world?

  • In your own words how would you describe the Church’s responsibility for missions?

  • Why must the proclamation of the gospel in words be accompanied by deeds and actions?

2021 Spring Sermon Series: A Community We Can Call Home

Rev. Dale Flowers

Questions for Reflection

  • Jesus charges the apostles to “go and make disciples.” How is the term “apprentice” perhaps a better description for what it means to learn about Jesus than the designation of a disciple?

  • Dale states that the Church has always made teaching integral to its existence, but it has not been good at training people how to live and love like Jesus. What activity, practice, or life experience has contributed the most to your sense of being “trained” as a follower of Jesus?

  • To someone who proclaims faith in Jesus, but whose actions do not support such a claim, the author James says their faith is dead or useless. How would you describe the relationship of behavior or deeds to our professed faith as a Christian?

Sermon: Baptized into Christ | Dead to Sin & Alive to God

2021 Spring Sermon Series: A Community We Can Call Home

Rev. Dr. Kent Webber

Questions for Reflection

  • According to Paul’s teaching, though God’s grace in Christ is available in abundance, what’s the problem with simply relaxing in and luxuriating in the gift of God’s grace and continuing with patterns of sinful attitudes and behaviors? In other words, if grace is so available, why not remain as you are after coming to Christ rather than seeking to become more Christ-like?

  • If dying to sin in Christ is part of the meaning of Christian baptism, what implication lies in Paul’s teaching that in baptism we look in anticipation to being raised with Christ to new life?

  • Since we all continue to be people “in process” of becoming more mature followers of Christ, what ongoing tensions do you see in your life or the lives or others around you in terms of living out Paul’s admonition to those who have been baptized, “So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus”?

Sermon: Getting in Tune with God Together

2021 Spring Sermon Series: A Community We Can Call Home

Rev. Emily Stockert

Questions for Reflection

  • One way to look at a church congregation is as a group of unrelated individuals who attend church services for private reasons. Another way is to look at the church as a body, made up of many parts. How do you think a person’s understanding of what a “church” is might influence her or his expectations and behavior as a church-goer and/or follower of Christ?

  • Pastor Emily uses the metaphor of an orchestra tuning as a way to understand the church as a community in tune with Christ. Using your imagination, expand on this metaphor. For example, using this metaphor, who do you see as our conductor? What are the various concert halls and other locations we might play in? Within the metaphor, what would be the music we would play (i.e. what is the work and/or actions the church performs)?

  • Reflect on the three scripture readings for today (John 17:20-24; 1 Corinthians 12:12-14; Ephesians 4:1-6). In what ways does the unity of the church strengthen and help the church remain true to its calling?

Questions for Reflection

  • How does the metaphor of the Body of Christ better represent the true nature of the Church created by the Holy Spirit versus the modern image of a structure, institution, or denomination?

  • Name one of several correctives Paul gives to the Corinthians for their misunderstanding of spiritual gifts and their abuse of placing a higher value on certain gifts over others?

  • In what ways do you think our congregation can improve upon its dependence on the Holy Spirit to lead and direct our worship, community life, growth, and effectiveness as a church?

Questions for Reflection

  • In describing the early community of believers, Emily says, “Notice that baptism and conversion or confession of faith marked the people as believers in Christ but believing alone didn’t make them a community.” What does unite the early believers in Christ as a community?

  • In what ways do the actions of the community of early believers as described in Acts 2:24-47 fulfill Jesus’ commandment that his followers love one another?

  • One of the characteristics of the community of early believers was “awe” at God’s activity among them. Where do you see God’s Spirit active today, in our FPC community and beyond?

2021 Lent & Easter Sermon Series: Look to Jesus

Questions for Reflection

  • If resurrection life is “already and not yet” how do you experience the “already” aspect of Jesus’ gift of new life?

  • Dale suggests that the quality of resurrection life is reflective in someone being more gracious, generous, and generative. Can you site an example of either of these qualities in your own life or that of someone you know?

  • If you were to ask a friend who does not share your faith in Christianity what they think of the belief that Jesus was resurrected from the dead, what might they say?

Sermon: “Doggedly” Following the Good Shepherd

2021 Lent & Easter Sermon Series: Look to Jesus

Rev. Emily Stockert

Questions for Reflection

  • What are the qualities of the Good Shepherd and the Gate of the Sheep? How do you see Jesus exhibiting these qualities in other gospel stories?

  • In your own life, do you relate to the metaphor of Jesus as your Good Shepherd? If so, how does this shape your life? If not, do you have another image for thinking about God and Jesus that you relate to more?

  • In John 10:16, Jesus said, “I have other sheep that don’t belong to this sheep pen. I must lead them too. They will listen to my voice and there will be one flock with one shepherd.” What are some ways that this teaching might inspire us as Christians today?

Sermon: The Pre-Existent, Divine Christ

2021 Lent & Easter Sermon Series: Look to Jesus

Rev. Dr. Kent Webber

Questions for Reflection

  • What difference does it make – whether we teach a Christology from below – that God was pleased with the man Jesus and adopted and exalted him, as compared with a Christology from above - that the pre-existent, divine Word of God became incarnate in Jesus, whom God sent to redeem us?

  • How does this passage clearly teach that the Risen Christ, while fully human is also fully divine and is therefore a worthy recipient of our worship, along with God the Creator?

  • How do you find the teaching of this passage comforting and encouraging?

2021 Lent & Easter Sermon Series: Look to Jesus

Rev. Emily Stockert

Questions for Reflection

  • Does thinking about the world as primarily power-driven or primarily relationship-driven change the way you hear and experience Jesus’ words “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me”? If so, how?

  • How might viewing the world as primarily power-driven or primarily relationship-driven influence the way churches (and the people of those churches) follow Jesus’ directive to “go and make disciples of all nations” (Mt 28:19-20)?

  • What does Jesus’ way teach us about leadership and power? What does Jesus’ way teach us about our responsibility towards our fellow humans?

Creating God, Your Fingers Trace
By Gere Hancock
John Pavik, Piano

Text of Hymn

Creating God, Your Fingers Trace

Creating God, your fingers trace
The bold designs of farthest space;
Let sun and moon and stars and light
And what lies hidden praise your might.

Sustaining God, your hands uphold
Earth’s mysteries known or yet untold;
Let water’s fragile blend with air,
Enabling life, proclaim your care.

Redeeming God, your arms embrace
All now despised for creed or race;
Let peace, descending like a dove,
Make known on earth your healing love.

Indwelling God, your gospel claims
One family with a myriad names;
Let every life be touched by grace
Until we praise you face to face.

Prelude: Draw us in the Spirit’s Tether

Music: Harold Friedell | Text: Percy Deamer
John Pavik, Organ

Draw us in the Spirit’s Tether
Music: Harold Friedell | Text: Percy Deamer
Draw us in the Spirit’s tether;
For when humbly, in thy name,
Two or three are met together,
Thou art in the midst of them:
Alleluya! Alleluya!
Touch we now thy garment’s hem.

As the brethren used to gather
In the name of Christ to sup,
Then with thanks to God the Father
Break the bread and bless the cup,
Alleluya! Alleluya!
So knit thou our friendship up.

All our meals and all our living
Make us sacraments of thee,
That be caring, helping, giving,
We may true disciples be.
Alleluya! Alleluya!
We will serve thee faithfully.

Questions for Reflection

  • If during a conversation someone where to say to you, “After all, God helps those who help themselves.” How might you suggest that such a statement does not agree with an understanding of Biblical faith?

  • In what way do you identify with the paralyzed man’s belief that it takes effort on his part in order for him to be healed? In what way do you not identify with this belief?

  • We might resist change, but life has taught us that not all aspects of change are bad. What good do you see resulting from the imposed health restrictions related to the coronavirus (i.e. sheltering-in-place)? What good do you think might come from changes we are likely to experience in the future?

Wonder of Wonders, Here Revealed (Presbyterian Humnal #499) - William Boyd
John Pavik, Organ

#### Text of Hymn

Wonder of wonders here revealed
God’s covenant with us is sealed
And long before we know or pray
God’s love enfolds us every day

Here in this sacrament we see
God’s grace unbound for all for me
May we respond with joyful praise
In loving service all our days

This child of God though young or old
We welcome now into Christ’s fold
To know with us God’s loving care
Here all our joys and sorrows share

Now we our vow of faith renew
Stretch wide our sights to global view
And claim with Christians far and near
A larger family held dear

O Christ, the Healer - tune: Erhalt uns, Herr (hymn 380 in Presbyterian Hymnal)
John Pavik, Piano

Text of Hymn
By Fred Pratt Green | Paul C. Edwards

O Christ the Healer we have come
To pray for health to plead for friends
How can we fail to be restored
When reached by love that never ends

From every ailment flesh endures
Our bodies clamour to be freed
Yet in our hearts we would confess
That wholeness is our deepest need

How strong O Lord are our desires
How weak our knowledge of ourselves
Release in us those healing truths
Unconscious pride resists or shelves

In conflicts that destroy our health
We diagnose the world’s disease
Our common life declares our ills
Is there no cure O Christ for these

Grant that we all made one in faith
In Your community may find
The wholeness that enriching us
Shall reach the whole of humankind

Prelude

Medley: We Walk by Faith, and Not by Sight (Dunlap’s Creek)
& We Come to You for Healing, Lord (Land of Rest)

Arr. John Pavik
John Pavik, Piano

Text of Prelude
We walk by faith, and not by sight:
No gracious words we hear
Of him who spoke as none e’er spoke,
But we believe him near.

Help then, O Lord, our unbelief,
And may our faith abound;
To call on you when you are near,
And seek where you are found.

We come to you for healing, Lord, of body, mind, and soul,
And pray that by your Spirit’s touch we may again be whole.

Through nights of pain and wakefulness, through days
when strength runs low,
Grant us your gift of patience, Lord,
your calming peace to know.

We come to you, O loving Lord, in our distress and pain,
In trust that through our nights and days your grace will heal, sustain.

2021 Winter Sermon Series: All Shook Up!

Rev. Emily Stockert

Questions for Reflection

  • Reflect on the father’s expression of “I believe, help my unbelief!” or “I have faith, help my lack of faith” in Mark 9. Does this phrase speak to you in any way about your own faith life?
  • Jesus ministered to people on the margins of faith in his time. Do you think the church could be more compassionate towards or inclusive of people who express a lack of faith? If yes, how so? If no, why not?
  • Jesus says of the unclean spirit, “This kind can come out only through prayer.” What do you think of the idea that some chaos can only be resolved by reaching out to God in prayer?

Questions for Reflection

  • Dale spoke of the “Martha in all of us.” In what way do you resemble Martha’s temperament, sense of responsibility, and/or her difficulty of accepting the consequences of her choices?

  • If Jesus were to say to you that “you are worried and distracted by many things,” what kind of things might he be referring to?

  • What helps you focus on the “one, necessary thing” of spending time with Jesus and learning from him during these trying times of being restricted to home?

Offertory & Reflection Questions

For All the Faithful Women - Finnish Folk Melody
John Pavik, Organ

Text of Offertory: For All the Faithful Women
Words by Herman G. Stuempfle Jr. (1975)
Source: Glory to God Presbyterian Hymnal #324

For all the faithful women who served in days of old.
To you shall thanks be given; to all, their story told.
They served with strength and gladness in tasks your wisdom gave.
To you their lives bore witness, proclaimed your power to save.

We praise your name for Miriam, who sang triumphantly
While Pharaoh’s vaunted army lay drowned beneath the sea;
For Ruth, who left her homeland and ventured forth in faith,
Who pledged to serve and worship Naomi’s God till death.

We sing of busy Martha, who toiled with pot and pan
While Mary sat in silence to hear the word again.
We praise the other Mary, who hastened to the tomb
And found her Lord arisen, dispelling doubt and gloom.

Lord, hear our praise of Dorcas, who served the sick and poor.
Her hands were cups of kindness, her heart an open door.
O God, for saints and servants, our fervent prayer we raise,
That, faithful in your service, our lives may sing your praise.

Offertory & Reflection Questions

Jesus, Lover of My Soul - Joseph Parry
Page #303 - The Presbyterian Hymnal
John Pavik, Organ

Text of Offertory: Jesus, Lover of My Soul

Jesus, lover of my soul, let me to thy bosom fly,
while the nearer waters roll, while the tempest still is high;
hide me, O my Savior, hide, till the storm of life is past;
safe into the haven guide, O receive my soul at last!

Other refuge have I none; hangs my helpless soul on thee;
leave, ah! leave me not alone, still support and comfort me.
All my trust on thee is stayed, all my help from thee I bring;
cover my defenseless head with the shadow of thy wing.

Plenteous grace with thee is found, grace to cover all my sin;
let the healing streams abound; make and keep me pure within.
Thou of life the fountain art; freely let me take of thee;
spring thou up within my heart, rise to all eternity.

Offertory & Reflection

Come Sunday
By Duke Ellington
Chris Studer, Piano

Lord, dear Lord above, God almighty,
God of love, please look down and see my people through.
I believe that God put sun and moon up in the sky.
I don’t mind the gray skies
‘Cause they’re just clouds passing by.

Lord, dear Lord above, God almighty,
God of love, please look down and see my people through.
I believe God is now, was then and always will be.
With God’s blessing we can make it through eternity.
Lord, dear Lord above, God almighty,
God of love, please look down and see my people through.

Questions for Reflection

  • In the reflection, Pastor Emily speaks about how John Lewis’s faith that “if we are all children of the same Creator, then discrimination is an error, a misconception of faulty logic” sustained in him hard times. How might our remembrance of Jesus Christ with the Lord’s Supper as “assurance of things hoped for” (Heb 11:1) sustain you and/or our church community in the New Year?
  • What do you think of Eugene Peterson’s clarification of the difference between wishing and hoping?
  • What is a hope you have for the year 2021?
