How does Asaph’s envy of other people and observations of the wicked shake that foundational belief? * In what way did Asaph’s doubt or confusion help him mature spiritually? * The psalm chronicles Asaph’s struggle in his faith. ### Questions for Reflection * How is Covid-19 virus both similar to and dissimilar from the biblical view of sin? * How would you paraphrase the meaning of the psalmist’s request to God, “So teach us to count our days that we may gain a wise heart”? * In this psalm, God’s “steadfast love” and grace are at the heart of who God is. How is that proclamation both taught and demonstrated by Jesus Christ? How have you experienced God’s “steadfast love” in your own life?

    ### Sermon: Voicing Our Sorrows to God #### Fall Sermon Series: Praying the Psalms Rev. Dale Flowers

    ### Questions for Reflection * When we face a crisis, it is natural to question God, ourselves, and our relationship with God. The prayer of Psalm 6 seems to bypass such questions in its cry for help. From your own experience what do you find helpful about this approach to God and what might be lacking by such an approach? * Does sharing your feelings/emotions in prayer or with a trusted friend help you process your experience of pain, suffering or loss? How so? * In the midst of a threatening life situation, what serves to assure you that God is present, that God cares about you; and that God hears your prayer?

    ### Questions for Reflection * Why is it important to recognize that sin is deeper than a violation of a moral code? * The sermon refers to sin as a disruption in our relationship with God, and names two broad forms of sin. What are these two categories? How do these types of sin disrupt our relationship with God, individually and corporately? * How does praying a sincere prayer of confession reorient us to God and remind us of our hope in Jesus Christ?

    ### Sermon: Praying our Gratitude #### Fall Sermon Series: Praying the Psalms Rev. Dale Flowers

    ### Questions for Reflection * Using Walter Brueggemann’s description of The Psalms as expressing our life of faith in relationship to God as one of three movements: either being (a) securely oriented; (b) painfully disoriented; or (c) surprisingly reoriented; which movement best describes the psalms you are most drawn to at this time of your life? * The psalmist speaks of God’s grace in the form of five related benefits: who forgives all your iniquity; who heals all your diseases; who redeems your life from the Pit; who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy; who satisfies you with good as long as you live. Which benefit expresses the way you have experienced God’s grace in your own life? * Psalms scholar Claus Westermann states: “only those who praise do not forget…. The secret of praise is the power it has to connect us with God…. Forgetting God and turning away from God always begins when praise has been silenced.” How important is praise to your relationship with God?

    ### Sermon: Psalm 137: Bringing It All to God #### Fall Sermon Series: Praying the Psalms Rev. Emily Stockert

    ### Questions for Reflection * Pastor Emily says that we should not rush to judge the psalmist for voicing his or her thirst for vengeance, even though the words are upsetting. Instead, we should first understand the context and have compassion for the tragedy that has befallen the psalmist. Do you agree? Does hearing the context of the psalm change your understanding of the last three lines? Can you think of contemporary situations where, before taking time to understand the context, people rush to judge victims who voice their anger at their circumstances? * Pastor Emily says, “Bringing the emotions that we are afraid of or ashamed of out of the dark corners of our hearts and into the light of God opens us up to forgiveness and the possibilities of a new way of life. When we bring our hurts before God, we avoid turning on one another, and we remain open to the hope of resurrection.” What does this statement mean to you? * Have you ever turned to the words of the psalms to help you in tough times?

    ### Sermon: Praying Our Gratitude for God’s Good Creation #### Fall Sermon Series: Praying the Psalms Rev. Dr. Kent Webber

    ### Questions for Reflection * Although God does not intend us to worship the environment which surrounds us, what might its beauty lead us to wonder? * What sort of attitude does this psalm reflect as it carefully observes the results of God’s creative work? When you look at creation, how do you see God’s hand in the intricacy and beauty of what you observe? * If we are stewards of God’s good creation as Scripture suggests, then when we damage God’s good creation we also disrespect our Creator. How concretely might we show greater respect for the environment God has bestowed on us?

    ### Sermon: Trust the Lord at All Times #### Fall Sermon Series: Praying the Psalms Rev. Dale Flowers

    ### Questions for Reflection * Psalm 62 speaks of one’s “soul finding rest in God” and in the same way Jesus invites his followers to “come to me . . . and you will find rest for your souls.” Have you experienced what it feels like to rest your soul in God? If so, how did prayer contribute to your finding such rest? * The psalmist compares trust in God with that of her so-called friends who have betrayed her trust and wounded her with their words and actions. We’ve all known the pain of misplaced trust in others. What are some reasons we might give for putting our trust in God? What are some reasons you may have heard others give for not trusting God? * Why do you think it takes humility and openness to trust God at all times?

    ### Questions for Reflection • How does understanding the context of Psalm 1 as giving hope to people in exile inform your reading of the Psalm? • Do you agree that people sometimes make “success” transactional? What does it mean to you that success is measured over a lifetime from the viewpoint of God? • Consider Pastor Emily’s statement that scripture is “a means of grace through which God reaches us directly.” What do you think this means? How can scripture be a way God’s grace reaches you?

    ### Questions for Reflection * What do you find comforting about the totality of Daniel’s vision of the four beasts, the little horn, God Almighty and the heaven-sent Son of Man? * Knowing Jesus’ merciful character, how to you feel about Jesus’ future coming at the end of time as the Son of Man, God’s agent of judgment? * How are you challenged to bear witness to your love and loyalty for Jesus in daily life? * How do you react to the teaching in Daniel’s vision (7:27) that “the kingship and dominion and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven shall be given to the people of the holy ones of the Most High; theirs shall be an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey them”?

    ### Questions for Reflection * When the king offers Daniel power in exchange for his interpretation of the writing on the wall, Daniel says, “Keep your gifts. Give the rewards to someone else.” How does Daniel’s refusal of the gifts show that he is drawn towards God? * Goldingay says “*In everyday events and in political affairs, some find life, some find death.*” What do you think it means to find life or death in everyday events? * How can asking ourselves whether a choice draws us towards God or away from God strengthen our faith and our relationship with Christ?

    ### Questions for Reflection * Knowing the 30-day edict about not making petition or prayer to any human or god other than to the king, Daniel chose to continue with his daily practice of prayer. If he had chosen to do otherwise, would he have compromised his faith? What in your mind does it mean to compromise one’s faith? * W. E. Orchard made this statement about prayer: *If your acts of prayer are the most regular thing in your life, … you will find that they regulate everything else.* If you agree with this statement, how has it been true in your own life? If you would like it to be more true of your prayer practice, what steps might you take to make it so? * How would you describe prayers you verbalize to God when you are in the midst of a crisis? What, if anything, helps to reassure you that God hears your prayer?

Does this story have any relevance for you today? * Are there areas in your life where you feel like you have to walk a line between secular culture and Christian values? How does the story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego set an example for us? * According to the sermon, what is our primary responsibility as Christians when we are feeling displaced or disoriented? ### Questions for Reflection * In the present moment as we battle the Covid-19 pandemic, struggle to defeat racial prejudice, and battle global warming, how do you view your personal future and that of your family, as well as the future of our church, our nation, and our planet? * What did Nebuchadnezzar’s dream communicate about the future? Is history meaningless and directionless, cyclical as our Hindu friends see it, or linear in nature? Why is Nebuchadnezzar’s dream good news? * In general terms what did Jesus teaching about the future consummation of God’s kingly reign? (i.e. the final coming of God’s kingdom) How does Jesus’ teaching bring hope and encouragement as we look to the fulfillment of God’s redemptive plan?

    ### Sermon: Daring Faith in a Time of Crisis #### Pre-Fall Sermon Series: Living At the Edge Rev. Dale Flowers

    ### Questions for Reflection * It is not the military might of Babylon, nor the training program of Nebuchadnezzar, nor vegetarian diet; nor the piety of Daniel and his friends, that is the central focus of this story, but the actions of God. What do you consider these actions to be? What is the author’s intended result of pointing this out in the opening chapter of the Book of Daniel? * The refusal to eat the king’s food is a statement of identity for Daniel and his friends, reinforcing who they are in a foreign land and alien culture. How does such an uncompromising act serve to reinforce their faith in God? * How does our current crisis of living through the Covid-19 pandemic, economic depression, and the persistent call for racial equity and justice affect our faith or trust in God? What helps you to persevere?

    ### Sermon: Peace Under The Vine and Fig Tree Rev. Emily Stockert

    ### Questions for Reflection * During times of stress and upheaval, does turning to scripture help you to have hope? And/or do you have other ways of drawing strength from God? * How might a prophetic vision like Micah’s help us to orient ourselves to the way of the Lord and to walk in Jesus Christ’s paths? * Micah envisioned peace “in the days to come” as everyone sitting under their own vine and fig tree with no one to make them afraid, and this vision can help us understand God’s will for our world. What do you envision as a modern day equivalent to Micah’s vision?

Dr. Kent Webber

    ### Questions for Reflection * How do both scriptural teaching in Genesis chapter 1 and the study of human biology contradict the view that humankind is multi-layered with some racial-ethnic groups being created superior to others? * What was Jesus’ response to the racial prejudice of his day? By implication, since Jesus is our model, what does that mean for us today? * In today’s text from Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians, what effects of Jesus’ atoning death does he highlight? How does that aspect of Jesus’ redeeming work guide and direct us as we seek to follow Him today?

    ### Questions for Reflection * Put yourself in the shoes of the laborer who only worked for one hour and got paid for a whole day. How would you feel? How is this situation related to God’s grace and God’s love for us? * How does Jesus’ parable(s) of the Kingdom of God help us understand God’s intention for us to live as a whole community...a whole nation...a whole planet? * Parables like Matthew 20:1-16 are meant to be read from many different angles and offer multiple meanings beyond today’s interpretation. How is the Holy Spirit using this parable to speak to you?

    ### Sermon: The Worldwide Mission of All God's People Rev. Dr. Kent Webber

    ### Questions for Reflection * If Jonah disobeyed God’s initial command to travel to Nineveh to deliver God’s message to the Assyrians because of a combination of fear and hatred, what prevents you from sharing your faith in Christ with unchurched people you know? * Jonah thought the Assyrians in Nineveh didn’t deserve to hear a message from God – even one of judgment. Who are those (individuals, groups, perhaps entire nations) you might label as “undeserving” of learning about God’s grace for us in Christ Jesus? * The story of Jonah (and many other biblical passages) tells us that we are not called simply for salvation, but also for service! That being the case, how have you responded to Christ’s call to serve as his ambassador? How might God in Christ be calling you to respond this coming week?

    ### Sermon: Contentment in a Discontented World Rev. Dale Flowers

    ### Questions for Reflection * We in the West consider the pursuit of happiness as a basic human right. When that pursuit becomes solely a matter of desiring money or acquiring wealth in what ways might it lead to something wrong? * Would you say that you are at a stage in life in which you desire what you don’t have and wish you did –or-- you are more content with what you do have? Whichever way you answer, what does contentment mean/look like for you? * Paul says, money (and wealth) is not the problem, but our attitude toward money is the determining factor. What are some ways money can be used for good? What are some specific examples of this either in your own life or that of others?

    ### Sermon: What Does Competence in Pastoral Ministry Look Like? ##### Sermon Series: How Essential is Church? ~ Themes from the Pastoral Letters Rev. Dr. Kent Webber

    ### Questions for Reflection * In terms of character, Paul advises Timothy, “set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.” Of those five areas, with which do you most struggle as you seek to be an example of the Christian life to others? * In terms of function, Paul asks Timothy to devote himself to the public reading of Scripture and to engage in a ministry of proclamation, exhortation, and teaching. If you have ever felt called to be a Bible study leader then these words also apply to you. Whether or not you have served in a teaching ministry, what is your degree of openness to listening to and responding to the Christian gospel through those who preach and teach the Word? * When you hear a challenging word of exhortation or a comforting word of hope, how do you respond to and apply what you have heard?

    ### Sermon: What Has to Change? Rev. Dale Flowers

    ### Questions for Reflection * Robin Diangelo defines ‘white privilege’ as the "automatic, taken-for-granted, advantage bestowed upon white people as a result of living in a society based on the premise of white as the human ideal." How is this value system antithetical to the gospel? * When you hear the word racist, what image or picture comes to mind? What is your own physical response to hearing the word? If you don’t consider yourself a racist, on what basis do you make that claim? * Martin Luther King Jr., said, “It may well be that we will have to repent in this generation. Not merely for the vitriolic words and the violent actions of the bad people, but for the appalling silence and indifference of the good people ….” What are some practical ways we as a church might begin to make a difference to address this problem of racism?

    ### Questions for Reflection * Does the study of the Bible play a role in your life? Do texts like 1 Timothy 2:8-15 influence your desire to study scripture (or even to go to church)? Why or why not? * Do you think the words of 1 Timothy 2:11 “Let a woman learn in silence with full submission” are consistent with the gospel accounts of Jesus’ life, ministry, crucifixion, and resurrection? * In our current society, do you see evidence of Christians mixing secular cultural values with Christian scripture in ways that are counter to your understanding of the gospel of Jesus Christ? On the other hand, are there ways that you think the church could use a strategy of accommodation to more effectively spread the gospel?

    ### Questions for Reflection * What three qualities do you think are most important for a church leader to model or exemplify? * The most common opinion people outside of the church say of it is that the church is judgmental. If our congregation could change that perception, what would you like to see it change to? --or-- What do you think the church should be known for? * If leadership is more a matter of function than position, what are some of the ways you have seen people provide leadership in the church? What are some of the ways you have provided leadership?

    ### Sermon: Being Godly in the Service of Others ##### Sermon Series: How Essential is Church? ~ Themes from the Pastoral Letters Rev. Dale Flowers

    ### Questions for Reflection * As Western Christians, we speak of salvation in personal and individualistic terms, yet Paul’s opening sentence in verse 11 offers a far wider scope of what God intends: For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. How does this description affect the way we see and address others who have no apparent interest in God or the church? * If the terms “Godliness” and “holiness” in the Pastoral Letters refers more to observable behavior done for the betterment of others in the name of Jesus, than our own personal spirituality (or piety), then what are some of the best examples of “Godliness” you see in our world today? * If someone were to catch you doing what is good (i.e. being gracious and generous in the service of others) and ask why you do it, how would you answer them?

    ### Sermon: Our Greatest Treasure ##### Sermon Series: How Essential is Church? ~ Themes from the Pastoral Letters Rev. Emily Stockert

    ### Questions for Reflection * What does it mean to you personally that you are “justified by grace” and not by anything you do or did? Or, in other words, what does it mean for you that your relationship with God is made right only by the power of the Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ’s ministry, death, and resurrection? * Do you ever measure other people’s worth based on circumstances beyond their control? Do you ever judge your own worth based on circumstances out of your control? How might the teaching that we are all “justified by grace through faith, not by works” apply to the way we relate ourselves and other people? * Do you think it’s essential that the church safeguard the teaching that we are justified by grace through faith? Why or why not?

    # Good Friday Worship Service ~ April 10, 2020 {:.text-center} ### Preparing to Engage in this Tenebrae Service > We recommend doing this worship service after sundown. You will need seven lighted candles placed about the room and either a snuffer or some means to extinguish the candles. There are seven sections with a three-fold pattern in each section: (1) Listen to the Scripture Reading; > (2) Respond by singing or praying as prompted; (3) Extinguish a candle. > > This service follows an early Christian observance called Tenebrae - Latin for "darkness or shadows." We are invited to reflect deeply on the events leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion and death. The service framework includes a gradual extinguishing of seven candles as we recount the sufferings and death of Jesus on our behalf and for our salvation. When the final candle is extinguished and we are left in total darkness, sit for a while in solemn stillness and silence before you transition away from the worship experience. > > Dramatic readings of the Gospel narrative are presented by Peter Schell. #### Prelude
