    Why Art?

Art at its best draws attention not only to the way things are, but to the way things are meant to be. ~ Tom Wright

First Pres devotes space to house an art gallery because art provides a means for discovery, inspiration, and growth. Engagement with art helps some of us better know and feel truth beyond the limitation of words. In this way we grow in our experience with God and become more informed of the world God invites us to serve. Biblical scholar Tom Wright states, “Art at its best draws attention not only to the way things are, but to the way things are meant to be.”

Artist Barbara Stout, who created the work in The Gallery at First’s new show, Studies of Spirit, says the process of creating these paintings “reminds me of our possibilities, that we all are miracles, and our love holds for us amazing power individually and as a global community. Studies of Spirit consists of over 25 ink wash on paper portraits designed to be shown as a group and examines the place where differences and ordinariness resonate as the true beauty in individual countenance. By using uniform square formats, the same black on white treatment, and the absence of background, I highlight uniqueness and equality. The series contains a global span of ethnicities and ages young to old.”
